Aloo (meaning potatoes) Chaat is a savory Indian street food. A visit to your local Asian market (or international isle) is needed to purchase tamarind chutney, papadum, & sev (fried chickpea flour). An appetizer to wow!
Ingredients [serves 3-4 people]
1 can (10-12oz) chickpeas, rinsed & drained
2 boiled/steamed potatoes, chopped
1 medium onion & 1 tomato, finely chopped
Yogurt Mixture: 1 cup yogurt, 1/2 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp chaat masala, 1 tsp red chilli powder & 1 tsp cumin
Topping
Sweet tamarind chutney (if paste, dilute with water)
Spicy coriander chutney (optional)
1 Papadum or fried tortilla strips
1/2 cup thin sev
1 tsp each: red chilli powder, chaat masala & cumin
(optional garnish) fresh coriander, chopped chillies and pomegranate seeds
Nani Says: Mix chickpeas, potatoes, onions & tomatoes, spread in baking dish. Dilute yogurt mixture with water until a thin sauce forms, pour on top. Add broken peices of papadum & sev on top. Sprinkle more chilli powder, chaat masala & cumin.
Drizzle sweet chutney, garnish with fresh coriander, chopped green chillies & pomegranate seeds. Serve immediately in small bowls
Leftovers: Use spare pappadum to make 'Papdi Chaat' by sprinkling chaat masala on top of hot papadums, adding chopped onions & chillies.
